If collaboration is key, you might invest in tools and processes that facilitate teamwork and communication. It’s about making those values visible, tangible, and actionable. People need to understand why they’re there and how they are able to connect to your mission. As you start to define it for them, you start looking for the opportunities for them to be able to live that every day. That’s what I mean by operationalizing it – putting the things into place so that they’re able to know what their guardrails are and then make decisions based on those core values. This isn’t a one-time exercise; it’s an ongoing process of refinement and adaptation.

We had one intern, who started with us in 2018, and is now a Level 3 data engineer getting ready to move into architecture and team leadership. This approach requires a shift in mindset – a willingness to invest in people and trust them to grow. It also requires a commitment to creating a culture where learning is valued and mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth. I remember one of the first things I asked Chat GPT was how to force my employees to do what I ask them to do. Looking back, I’m ashamed of myself because I realized I was trying to tell them how to do their job instead of putting them on a mission. That’s a common mistake that many founders make. They get so caught up in the details that they forget to communicate the bigger picture. True leadership isn’t about control; it’s about employee empowerment. It’s about giving your team the autonomy to make decisions and take ownership of their work. I don’t ever have to go to Rebecca or Valerie or any of our amazing team and tell them how to do their job. I sit with them and I explain to them what I’m trying to accomplish, and then I get out of their way. Of course, we monitor progress and provide support when needed, but we trust our team to deliver. This approach not only improves morale and engagement but also fosters innovation. When people feel empowered, they’re more likely to take risks, experiment with new ideas, and challenge the status quo. It’s a virtuous cycle that drives growth and success. It’s also about listening – learning what is working and what is not working. Because what might have worked when you were the founder and you started it, once you have 10 people doing it, it may not work for them the same way. Creating a culture of open communication and feedback is essential for continuous improvement.

Building Scalable Systems: Beyond the Founder's Vision

As your company grows, you need to move beyond ad-hoc solutions and invest in scalable systems. This isn’t just about technology; it’s about processes, workflows, and communication protocols. What technology do you need to not take you just from where you are with 20 employees, but what is the limit that you’re looking for – the sky ahead – that’s 200 employees? How do you get you to create those systems and processes now so that you don’t have to stop and rebuild every 10 people that you hire? It’s about anticipating future needs and building a foundation that can support sustained growth. This requires a willingness to let go of control and trust your team to implement and maintain those systems. It also requires a commitment to continuous improvement. Regularly review your processes, identify bottlenecks, and make adjustments as needed. Don’t be afraid to experiment with new tools and technologies. The key is to create a system that is flexible, adaptable, and aligned with your company’s values. And remember, technology is just an enabler. The real power comes from the people who use it. So, invest in training and development to ensure your team has the skills and knowledge they need to leverage those tools effectively. Without these systems in place, even the most talented team will struggle to scale effectively.
